요약
 본고는 미국으로 이주한 한국 출신 화교들의 종족 정체성(ethnic identity)을 다중정체성 저글링(multi-identities juggling)과 마음의 체 제(regime of the heart)라는 분석틀을 통해 검토하였다. 우선, 그들이 미국으로 이주한 후 중국계 미국인이나 중국인으로 살지 않고 어떻게 미 국한화(美國韓華)라는 또 다른 인종 카테고리를 만들었는지 살펴보았다. 그리고 그들이 한국 화교가 서울 수표동 소재 구 중화상회 건물의 소유권 을 둘러싸고 주한타이뻬이대표부를 상대로 벌인 보산운동과 중화민국의 타이완화 가운데 나타난 무호적 여권 차별에 대한 반대운동과 관련하여 보여준 다양한 사회 활동을 중점적으로 분석하였다. 미국한화는 이 두 운 동에 적극적으로 참여하면서 구체적인 국면마다 자신들을 미국인, 자랑스러운 대한민국 출신 화교, 충성스로운 중화민국인으로 규정하였다. 그리 고 이러한 다양한 정체성을 기반으로 한국화교를 지원하였다. 즉, 이들이 미국한화 또는 표면적으로 내세우는 다양한 정체성의 기저에는 한국화교 에 대한 강한 헌신의 마음이 자리잡고 있던 것이다. 통상적으로 전략적 유 동성을 강조하는 다중정체성 저글링과 특정 종족집단에 대한 헌신의 마음 은 일견 모순되어 보인다. 그러나 미국한화의 경우에는 그들이 한국화교 에 대해 유지하고 있는 지속적이고 공고한 헌신과 충성이 바로 그들의 다 중정체성 저글링을 창출하는 원동력이 되는 동전의 양면과 같은 아이러니 를 보여준다.
Abstract This study examines the ethnic identity of the meiguo hanhua (美國韓華), overseas Chinese in Korea (OCK) who migrated to the U.S. by employing the concepts of identity juggling. In particular, it focuses on 1) how they evolved into meiguo hanhua, a new sub-ethnic group of Chinese instead of being simply Chinese Americans and 2) in what context they flexibly choose to present themselves as Americans, Koreans, and loyal citizens of the ROC(Republic of China). This research reveals that meiguo hanhua’s seemingly flexible selection of ethnic identity, in fact, demonstrates their commitment and loyalty towards OCK. For example, they present themselves as Americans to amplify OCK’s concerns and voices to the PRC and the ROC consulate/embassy in the U.S. so it could attract international attention to the matters. They also recommended OCK to be Korean citizens to maximize their legal protection and access to welfare benefits in South Korea when the Taiwanization of the ROC withdrew ROC’s protection over OCK. In conclusion, it was their untiring and firm commitment towards OCK that determines when and which ethnic identity they choose to present among Americans, Koreans, loyal citizens of the ROC. In other words, ironically, the “flexible” identity selection of meiguo hanhua was another side of same coin of their “firm” and “fixed” commitment towards OCK.
