Abstract |
Urban is a space for innovation. With the accumulation and diffusion of human capital and knowledge in cities, innovation has been strengthened. However, it is a question whether innovation will increase with the expansion of urban scale and whether there is an optimal urban scale. Few scholars have explored the optimal urban scale from the perspective of innovation, which is an innovative problem and also a problem of great practical significance. In this paper, the panel data of prefecture-level and above cities in China from 2001 to 2016 are selected, and OLS model is established. Panel analysis and cross-section analysis are carried out respectively to prove that there is an inverted U-shaped relationship between urban scale and innovation, and there is the optimal urban scale. The data including municipalities directly under the central government show that the optimal urban scale is 11.46 million people, while the data excluding municipalities show that the optimal urban scale is 6.227 million people. Cross-section analysis shows that the optimal urban scale values obtained from different years and different sample scale are different. The optimal urban scale may be a dynamic value. From 2001 to 2016, the optimal urban scale in each year without municipalities directly under the central government is between 8.706 million and 13.847 million, showing a gradual increase trend; In the absence of municipalities directly under the Central Government, the optimal urban scale is between 5.837 million and 6.771 million people, which is in an irregular state and fluctuates around the scale of 6.34 million people. Most cities in China have not yet reached the optimal urban scale, and there is much room for improvement in urban scale. |
