Abstract : Chinese historical climatology possesses unique potential for climate reconstruction based on vast historical records, including the Twenty-Four Histories, Local Gazetteers, and imperial archives. It is currently undergoing a qualitative transition from qualitative analysis to advanced science. Zhu Kezhen (竺可楨), the pioneer in the early 20th century, established modern research foundations by utilizing "wuhou" (物候, phenological) records, such as the dates of flowering, to estimate climate during the Southern Song dynasty and explored the climate-civilization hypothesis. Following the founding of the PRC in the 1950s, state-led research expanded, culminating in the compilation of the monumental 《中國三千年氣象記錄總集》 (Compendium of China's Three Thousand Years of Meteorological Records). This work systematized 3,000 years of historical meteorological records, solidifying the scientific basis of the discipline. The quantification period in the 1980s saw Zhang De'er establishing systematic statistical methodologies. Man Zhimin (滿志敏) challenged Zhu Kezhen's chronology, demonstrating that China's Medieval Warm Period (MWP) lasted from the early 11th to the late 13th century, thereby deepening scholarly understanding. Since the 2000s, Ge Quansheng (葛全勝) and his team have led the field by integrating multi-proxy data (historical documents, tree rings, speleothems) with quantitative analysis to reconstruct high-resolution climate sequences. Their research empirically confirmed a high correlation between cooling phases and social turmoil, such as war and social instability, thereby expanding the climate-society interaction studies. These achievements led to the digital visualization of climate disasters, progressing from the Atlas of Drought/Flood Distribution over the Past 500 Years to the vector-based 《中國千年區域極端旱涝地圖集》 (China’s Millennial Regional Extreme Drought-Flood Atlas). In the latest development phase (2020s–Present), new research impetus comes from integration with advanced technology, including Deep Learning and AI, to automate the extraction of climate information from historical texts, significantly boosting research efficiency. Furthermore, the proliferation of open data platforms like TPDC is enhancing the transparency and reproducibility of research findings. In conclusion, Chinese historical climatology has successfully merged extensive traditional records with cutting-edge digital technology. It has firmly established itself as a core academic field contributing to the global climate change agenda (IPCC, PAGES) and is poised to offer essential long-term insights for forecasting future extreme climate risks and formulating sustainable development strategies.
