Abstract : This article differs from existing studies on Hong Kong Christianity, which have mostly been divided into Protestant-Anglican and Catholic categories. Instead, it examines the historical development of the Christian community that grew within Hong Kong's history after its opening, encompassing both Protestant-Anglican and Catholic traditions, and explores the processes through which it became “Indigenization” Schools operated by Christian missionary organizations educated Hong Kong's elite and Chinese people who converted to Christianity through missionaries gradually established independent Chinese churches, strengthening the Indigenization of Christian communities in the mid-20th century. After the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949, the influx of refugees and missionaries from mainland China expanded the Christian community in Hong Kong, and the growth of Christian communities led to the Indigenization of churches led by Chinese clergy. The Catholic Church appointed its first Chinese bishop in 1969, and the Anglican Church elected its first Chinese bishop in 1981. However, since the 2010s, the Hong Kong Christian community has faced significant challenges due to the strengthening of China's “Sinicization” policy toward religion. Between the tradition of “Indigenization” in Hong Kong Christianity and the Chinese government's policy of “Sinicization” of the church, there are difficult issues and conflicts that have persisted in China for over 100 years, including debates over Westernization and Sinicization, religion and politics, and cultural exchange and cultural invasion. Facing the new challenge of the increasingly oppressive “Sinicization” policy imposed from above, the Hong Kong Christian community is responding in various ways, including adapting to reality, resisting in solidarity with democratic movements, and adopting a neutral stance, while simultaneously continuing the open “Indigenization” missionary tradition from below.
